Liza Raynal: This 4th of July Weekend at The Marsh

Dear All,

Just a short note from the Tirinity Alps. I’m sitting here in Tops in Weaverville. Sheepishly, I’m at the Starbucks area—the only place with wireless that I know of in this wonderful funky, arty city. And boy oh boy is it smoky in Weaverville from the lighting storm. There’s many fires up here. Luckily up near Trinity Center, it’s not too bad.

Anyway Weaverville, would be a great place to spend the holiday if there wasn’t so much smoke. There’s ice cream socials, a rodeo and they close hwy 299 down the center of the city for a local parade.

Alas, I suggest you stay in the much less smoky Bay Area and go see AMERICAN JOE, Liza Raynal’s new performance this week—either the day before or the day after the holiday. And what an appropriate show to see this 4th weekend with its focus on US Military and most of our own less war-like leanings

So before or after your barbeques, we are offering a $10 discount ticket for AMERICAN JOE on July 3 & 5 with the password “boots.”  More info below.

The fires have also had impact on our extension of Ann Randolph’s SQUEEZE BOX. We announced last week that it would be extended for four dates in July and August. Alas, because she is teaching in August at Esalen, where there are fires and hence, potential road closures, it may be diifficult for her to get to San Francisco. We have moved her extension to September. So she’s still coming back, but a little later.

Also, I am thrilled that Brian Copeland will be bringing back NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN for two weeks of benefits for The Marsh (July 17-29). Please see this show for the first time or again and help SUPPORT THE MARSH!

From an air-conditioned café—avoiding the smoke in Weaverville.

My best,
Stephanie Weisman

KISS MY BOOTH, is a natural product of Doggett’s business as an Italian Importer. Every year, she participates in Fancy Food Shows in San Francisco and New York, a surreal environment offering strange and quirky personalities, including booth "babes" and buyers with a mixed variety of motives for showing interest in her products. Doggett depicts the stress, the humor and the competitiveness of working these shows, all the while hoping that the perfect buyer will come in and place orders for her pasta.

Ann Randolph, One Woman Wonder — SF Chronicle
http://www.sfgate.com

“Hilarious and generally outrageous... a natural-born performer with a veteran's chops
... a quiet sense of the miraculous— Bay Guardian

"When I first saw [Squeeze Box], I was deeply moved. Ann Randolph's amazing work, both as a writer and fellow performer, touched my heart and my mind so profoundly that I felt it belonged on the New York stage." — Anne Bancroft

"She goes in and out of these characters. She's a bit of a genius. I've been around, and I haven't seen so much talent in one person since I married Anne Bancroft. I've got to say that these are two great Anns, and I am glad that they hooked up together." — Mel Brooks

"Rubber faced Randolph is wickedly hysterical." — Los Angeles Times

"Randolph allows us to see ourselves in and among people who seem utterly removed from our urban existence."
— LA Weekly

With pathos and humor, Randolph skillfully weaves together stories about working in a women's homeless shelter and the pursuit of true love. Her painfully funny portraits of the shelter's residents, and hilarious account of her hiking trip with Harold the accordionist, man of her dreams, are beautifully drawn in this poignant tale about finding dignity and grace in unusual places.
