Liza Raynal Opens

Dear All,

I've gone from one disaster zone to another.

I wrote you last week from the Trinity Alps fire zone and this week I'm outside of the flooding Quincy Illinois visiting my sister and dad to celebrate his 87th birthday. He is such an inspiration. Happy and ready to try new things. In fact last month he started a regimen of stationary bicycling where he lives in Florida. I hope I will be willing to try such things in my senior years!

Quincy is fine, it didn't actually flood. The levees broke above it, but flying in I could see the flooded farms.

I just got an e-mail from Dan Hoyle who is close by in Southern Missouri researching for his next solo performance. Although he won't be visiting me, it turns out that Liza Raynal, who is opening her show on Friday night went to school with Dan.  Small world for those 28 year olds.

And what a show she has.  It is wonderful and is inspiring lots of talk about war and family after each of her show.  So please join us for AMERICAN JOE's, opening on Friday night. And, this week, I can still offer you the $10 discount ticket for AMERICAN JOE with the password “boots.”  More info below.

On July 16, our MarshRising series will be presenting Jeff Nichols and his five connected characters in ASK THE QUESTION, including “Ahmed,” the Pakistani immigrant held without charge after 9/11, to “The Initiated One,” a guru offering enlightenment for the capitalist age.

And tickets are selling fast for the return of Brian Copeland's NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN. Brian starts performing his mega hit in just eight days. So please join us for his two weeks of performances from July 17-29 and support The Marsh. Brian is graciously donating all the proceeds from GENUINE to The Marsh.  WE THANK HIM and we know you will love the show, whether you've seen it before or for the first time!

I hope to see you soon.

My best,
Stephanie Weisman

Opening this week!

Five loosely connected characters—from “Ahmed,” the Pakistani immigrant held without charge after 9/11, to “The Initiated One,” a guru offering enlightenment for the capitalist age—reveal the conflicts of ideology, faith, political power and the role of the individual in contemporary American life. Alternately dark and comic, intellectual and absurd, “Ask the Question” will engage and provoke you.

Jeff Nichols’ performing career has included singing in rock bands, playing trumpet, acting, and spoken word performances.  He will be attending Southern Illinois University’s Playwriting MFA program in the Fall.  “Ask the Question” was work-shopped in Minneapolis at the Acadia Café and further developed with David Ford at The Marsh.

KISS MY BOOTH, is a natural product of Doggett’s business as an Italian Importer. Every year, she participates in Fancy Food Shows in San Francisco and New York, a surreal environment offering strange and quirky personalities, including booth "babes" and buyers with a mixed variety of motives for showing interest in her products. Doggett depicts the stress, the humor and the competitiveness of working these shows, all the while hoping that the perfect buyer will come in and place orders for her pasta.

“Hilarious and generally outrageous... a natural-born performer with a veteran's chops
... a quiet sense of the miraculous— Bay Guardian

"When I first saw [Squeeze Box], I was deeply moved. Ann Randolph's amazing work, both as a writer and fellow performer, touched my heart and my mind so profoundly that I felt it belonged on the New York stage." — Anne Bancroft

"She goes in and out of these characters. She's a bit of a genius. I've been around, and I haven't seen so much talent in one person since I married Anne Bancroft. I've got to say that these are two great Anns, and I am glad that they hooked up together." — Mel Brooks

"Rubber faced Randolph is wickedly hysterical." — Los Angeles Times

"Randolph allows us to see ourselves in and among people who seem utterly removed from our urban existence."
— LA Weekly

With pathos and humor, Randolph skillfully weaves together stories about working in a women's homeless shelter and the pursuit of true love. Her painfully funny portraits of the shelter's residents, and hilarious account of her hiking trip with Harold the accordionist, man of her dreams, are beautifully drawn in this poignant tale about finding dignity and grace in unusual places.
