SECRET CIRCUS, BRIAN COPELAND
Last chance to catch the wonderful ROY ZIMMERMAN!!

Dear All,

One of the top reasons 2006 has been good for The Marsh is because we met up with Roy Zimmerman. We have been lucky enough to have him on our stage for most of the last six months, first in Berkeley and now in San Francisco.  He is one of a kind, and his songs change the way you look at things.  From a love song to Dick Cheney (of all people) to the celebration of abstinence in a painful and pain-filled dating song, this is political spoofery at its best.  This is his closing weekend. Treat yourself to a little fun.  Of course, we hope he’ll be back again before too long.

Brian Copeland’s book-signing party was a lot of fun last weekend. As most of you know, he had a two-year run here before he left for New York last summer, and now, during this limited return engagement to celebrate the publication of his book, he is still filling the theater and changing people’s lives. Buy your tickets soon and experience his heartfelt and redemptive story for yourself.

The cool and wonderful SECRET CIRCUS continues in Berkeley.  Azeem was featured in the Chronicle today – read all about it at:
This week the show features Danee Black doing a poetry set; Mack Dennis in solo performance and Julia Jackson, a self-described Y-chromosome-challenged actress, comedienne and Punchline regular, performing  a piece called TURBULENCE.  To round the evening out, the wonderful Micia Mosely challenges the notion that there is only one way to be Black or Queer in the 21st century in her first solo show, WHERE MY GIRLS AT: A COMEDIC LOOK AT LACK LESBIANS IN THE BAY.  For more about these performances, see below!

Don’t forget Marsh Youth Theater – it’s still not too late to enroll the kids.  Call 826-5750 ext. 3 or get the application on-line at www.themarsh.org.

All my best,
Stephanie Weisman, Artistic Director and Founder

Closing this weekend! at
The Marsh San Francisco:

Roy Zimmerman’s
FAULTY INTELLIGENCE

Through October 18, 2006
Thursday through Saturday at 8pm

Written and performed by Roy Zimmerman

"Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles." The Los Angeles Times

"I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs. And the rhymes actually rhyme, they don't just 'rhyne.'" —
Tom Lehrer

"Roy's lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection." —
Joni Mitchell

An evening of scathing satirical songs, written and performed by the man the Los Angeles Times calls "a latter-day Tom Lehrer." Armed only with a guitar, a strident baritone whine, and wicked sense of rhyme and ridicule, ‘FAULTY INTELLIGENCE’ includes a love song to the sexiest man alive, "Dick Cheney," a lesson in "Creation Science 101," a portrait in song of "Jerry Falwell's God" and the bawk-along "Chickenhawk," already a Zimmerman classic.

The Marsh in association with Crowded Castle and Ubwenge Arts Coalition presents
SECRET CIRCUS

September 13 – October 19, 2006
Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm

A futuristic window where solo-theater, spoken word, poetry readings and jazz join and implode. 5 weeks, 5 different shows, twenty of the Bay Area’s up-and-coming best.  As producer Azeem says: “Both the theater and the circus are places where imagination thrives, springs up and flies high, so to take all kinds of artists and put them under one tent – it’s genius and magic all at once.”

This week:

  • Danee Black – poetry set
  • Mack Dennis – solo performance
  • Julia Jackson in TUBULANCE.  Julia Jackson is a San Francisco comedienne and actress.  Her skewering of political figures, as well as her own family, has earned her a loyal following in the Bay Area.  Living Y chromosome challenged and having a family tree that reaches from Wisconsin to Harlem, has left Julia with no shortage of material to draw from.  She has performed at the Fringe festival in Edinburgh in Scotland, was a Semi-Finalist in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition and performs regularly at The Punchline.
  • Micia Mosely – An excerpt FROM WHERE MY GIRLS AT: A COMEDIC LOOK AT BLACK LESBIANS IN THE BAY.  Micia’s first solo show reveals the issues that connect and separate myriad Black women’s communities in the Bay Area. Through different personas, Micia portrays the diversity of Black lesbian experiences, challenging the notion that there is only one way to be Black or Queer in the 21st century. Each show is unique, as Micia’s characters engage with the audience in an improvised Question & Answer segment.  Fresh, hilarious, and insightful, this show is not to be missed.

In a world where it may seem that things are out of control, Micia demonstrates that art has power when people take action.  Art is not something to simply be consumed, but used to strengthen individuals and communities. She reminds us that performers and audience members co-create experiences that prove people can come together and generate change.  Her recent performances highlight audience members participating in their own consciousness raising.

During the past 10 years, Micia has displayed her perfect comedic timing as emcee for the San Francisco Pride Dyke March, the World Homo Hop Festival, Oakland’s Art and Soul festival, the National Queer Arts Festival, Sistahs Steppin’ in Pride, and Liquid Fire Productions.
