MAY DAY PARADE! TOWLE’S HILL & Wine Tasting!

Dear All:

Wayne Harris’ “May Day Parade” has got off to a great start. He has everyone in the audience cheering on his eight-year-old self as he marches proudly down Newstead Boulevard in his first parade, accompanied by the rat-a-tat-tat of the drums! Wayne was interviewed on KALW’s Artery two Fridays ago. Here’s the link: http://www.crosscurrentsradio.org/features.php?story_id=496. He also got a great 3 star review on Doug Konecky’s SF Theater Blog. Doug especially liked Wayne’s “depiction of the 'Letter Girls,' a group of oversized young women from Beaumont High who, having been judged too large to become cheerleaders, get their moment in the sun dancing to James Brown at the May Day Parade.” He also felt the show “makes us all long to have been there, marching down the boulevard, staying in step and keeping it real.”High praise indeed. Here’s the full link (just scroll down to find Wayne: http://sf-theaterblog.blogspot.com/. Use the password ‘bugle’ for a $10 ticket.

Mark Kenward and the Gundlach Bundschu winery continue to offer the perfect Friday combo of great wines and a great show. “Towle’s Hill” is truly fascinating in its enactment, at a very personal level, of 20th century San Francisco history. It is also a moving meditation on fatherhood. And after the performance, and our up close and personal experience of the vineyard, it was really fun to taste its fruity wonderful wines and relax after a long week.

As I mentioned last week, so many people wanted to see Ann Randolph’s final shows we had a bit of audience mayhem out on the street. So, to avoid further unruliness (!), we’re thrilled to announce her show has been extended through December 14. Tell your friends! After a short hiatus, she will start up again on October 25. Ann will also be leading another solo performance class so sign up now (details below).

Theater Bay Area is one of those under-sung, under-praised operations which supports local theater in many diverse and important ways. One of the most fun is their annual Night Of Free Theater, which this year is actually Nights Of Free Theater as it is running throughout October and into November. We were able to welcome 10 beneficiaries to Ann Randolph’s show on Sunday and are expecting 10 more to May Day Parade on November 9. We have included the link in our About Town section at the end of the newsletter. Sign up for Wayne and other shows there.

My best,
Stephanie Weisman

Just the sight of them big butt girls in short skirts doing the “dirty dog” down Newstead Blvd. put the crowd into a frenzy…I mean, folks were following the band down the street. Ain’t seen nothing like it before or since

There’s a parade coming! ….so, get a seat on the curb with a snow cone and watch as Wayne Harris portrays 1 Baptist  preacher, 3 generations on a porch, a 4 man  bass drum ensemble, 12 rather large “letter” girls bumping and grinding down a mid-town boulevard and the 100 member Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church Drum & Bugle Corps.

Award winning performer and San Francisco Bay Area favorite, Wayne Harris, takes us on a road less traveled…(or maybe less marched) as he prepares at 8 years old, for his first parade maneuvering between a jealous big brother, a drunken deacon, a foul mouthed banner partner, new shoes and a grandmother of biblical proportions…. all while learning the value of family, history and the importance of staying in step!

Gundlach Bundschu, California’s oldest family-owned and operated winery, is celebrating its sesquicentennial throughout 2008 at the winery and across the nation by putting wine on center stage with the creation of Towle’s Hill, an original, one-man play performed by Mark Kenward and directed by David Ford.

Towle’s Hill chronicles the history of Gundlach Bundschu, while offering insight into California history from the earthquake to prohibition. The dynamics of family businesses, the complexities of father-son relationships and the desire to create something meaningful from a lifetime of work form the heart of the show.

Towle’s Hill will be followed by a tasting of Gundlach Bundschu wines—a multi-sense event!

With pathos and humor, Randolph skillfully weaves together stories about working in a women's homeless shelter and the pursuit of true love. Her painfully funny portraits of the shelter's residents, and hilarious account of her hiking trip with Harold the accordionist, man of her dreams, are beautifully drawn in this poignant tale about finding dignity and grace in unusual places.

The Marsh Rising Series

Amanda Duarte's
LUCKY PINK WONDERLAND

October 22, 2008
Wednesday, 7:30pm

Marsh Main Stage

A spunky satire of fame culture”- Village Voice

Duarte has the makings of a young Carol Burnet”- The EsoCritic

Your grandfather laughed. I don’t think he understood it, but he always likes your little antic.” -Amanda’s Mom

“Lucky Pink  Wonderland” lies at the intersection of fame and rehab, a terrible and funny fever dream of a play that chronicles the struggles of What's-her-name, remembered by the public as Pinky Peppercorn, the child lead of the popular eponymous 1980's sitcom. What's-her-name's life has since become one long "Where Are They Now" segment- she has drifted for fifteen years on a sea of booze and drugs, to find herself washed up on the banks of the Hudson, a destitute yet too-familiar face, utterly alone in the madding crowd, trying to start over. As What's-her-name soldiers on through a landscape littered with wannabes, has-beens and never-beens, she asks herself whether fame is a dream or a nightmare, and either way, why can't she wake up?

Bill Santiago's
THE FUNNY OF LATIN DANCE

October 29, 2008
Wednesday, 7:30pm

Marsh Main Stage

Calling all salsaholics, tango freaks, bachata addicts, merengue maniacs, chachaficianados, and bailamosapiens...who like a good laugh! Stand-up comic Bill Santiago riffs on his feet - about his feet and yours! - hunting for the Funny of Latin Dance.

The Funny of (Latin) Dance explores the humor of every type of Latin dance, the actual dances, the scenes surrounding them, the personalities they attract and unleash, the instructors, the wannabes, the obsessions, the trepidations, the hang-ups, the thrills, the expressions and connections and individual dance histories that every one has in relation to their own dancing or brush with Latin dancing, and of course the music. Come hear and help shape Santiago's take on the syncopated reconquista of American dance floors by the cadera-centric body language of la raza, aka the vida loca people. Be ready to share your dance stories - about every kind of Latin dancing and to share your own dance moves to the live music from members of the newest Latin Groove sensation, Benito Cereno.
